How Extinction Rebellion Netherlands Became One of the Biggest and Best Organised Climate Movements in Europe – A Story in Memes

When Greenpeace NL and Extinction Rebellion (XR) NL teamed up to tackle private jets in 2022, three more people came together to promote the action: an over-excited Tumblr-ina, a depressed redditor, and a boomer. Together we created airplane memes till our fingers bled. Then we founded Meme Rebellion, an open and decentralised XR meme collective.

With the obvious innovation of memeing actions from inside the action we became both chroniclers of XR NL and a binding agent for a rapidly growing movement when the A12 highway blockades took off! 25.000 participants on one day. Daily blockades of the same spot for a month. They were turbulent and exciting times!

Since then, XR NL has only continued to flourish and struggle with love and rage.
