For years now, there has been the notion that some algorithms might be harmful to democracy or increase inequality. But does the problem lie in the people who build the algorithm, the algorithm itself, data - or somewhere else entirely?
We believe that the problem is already in the approach: We can't engage with algorithms solely technically nor socially, but need a multidisciplinary framework. Our student seminar, "If Then - But Why?" (having completed its pilot phase), provides exactly such a framework. In this session, we will showcase our methods through the example of the match-making algorithm that dating app Hinge claims to use. After applying the methods hands-on, we will discuss the value of approaches likes ours for teaching, science communication, and more.
Our multidisciplinarity is rooted in our backgrounds in bioinformatics (Paula), sociology/computer science (Luca), and physics/political science (Calle). It is complemented by a critical-feminist understanding of algorithms, highlighting gender's role in technology.
No coding or social science experience required. Materials will be provided. Details on seminar concept: if-then-but-why.de.
