AI is arriving in the Global South faster than the capacity to govern it, question it, or imagine alternatives to it. Using gender as a lens, this talk asks what safety, accountability and digital justice actually mean when the people most affected have the least power to define the terms.

The AI industry is operating in the Global South with exceptions that would be unthinkable in any other sector, moving fast through welfare systems, courts and critical infrastructure with minimal testing, transparency or accountability. But the problem runs deeper than what gets regulated. It is about who gets to define harm, whose knowledge counts, and why the structures meant to build alternatives keep running into the same walls. Drawing on original research on AI and gender in India, this talk asks what the fight for digital justice actually requires in the Global South - and who actually has the agency to never give up on it.
