Keeping the Internet on: Turkey's struggle for digital rights

Discover the tools, methods and techniques Turkish citizens have pioneered to detect internet controls, shutdowns and blackouts during national emergencies. Turkey Blocks is Turkey's leading digital rights and internet shutdown observatory, recipient of the 2017 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award.

Internet controls are increasingly used to silence vulnerable communities, restrict political speech and mask systematic violations of fundamental human rights. Online censorship, bandwidth throttling and social media geoblocking in Turkey has silenced the voices of LGBTI communities, women's groups and independent media.

Access to information online is critical to preserve a healthy democracy, support the work of civil society and encourage economic development. New laws and filtering technologies now threaten the funadamental premise of a free and open internet.

In this talk we present our cutting-edge work in Turkey, framed in the context of critical moments through the last year, and relate issues in the Mediterranean and Middle East to the emerging Europe-wide and global struggle for a free and open internet.
