The rise of genetic testing is rapidly changing the ways both society and medical professionals think about diseases. For certain diseases, such as ovarian cancer and breast cancer, there has been a strong like to genetic basis for disease emergence. These diseases are also highly gendered in both medicine and society. However, this genetic facet to these diseases expands the disease narrative to encompass the experiences beyond a singular suffering body. Self-care sets out to reclaim bodily autonomy in light of prevailing notions of genetic fatalism, the gender binary, and medical surveillance regarding Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome.
