Anti-Tracking Tools and Tactics

Short thesis

This hour-long session will examine and demo several browser plug-ins that either disable tracking on websites or alert you that you're being tracked. These plugins include NoScript, which disables all Javascript on websites that you visit, and AdBlock Plus, which blocks advertisements and disables tracking. We'll also lok at the Electronic Frontier Foundation's plugin Privacy Badger, which was recently released in an alpha build.

After examining these tools, we'll spend some time thinking about why it is so difficult to escape surveillance. From there, we'll speculate about ways in which we might "escape" in the future, and also the worth of such an escape -- i.e. the limited possibility that tools alone can engender a state that respects and enforces personal boundaries.

Participants should, if possible, bring laptops.
