Opening Keynote: The last kilometer, the last chance

Short thesis

During the period from 2016 – 2025, the "other half" of the human race will be connected to the Net. Providing connection to the world's poor is the greatest act of social justice, educational opportunity and economic equalization within our power.

The human intelligence that would develop from the universalization of learning can solve the humanity's global problems. But the actual mechanisms likely to bring the Net to the rest of us are, instead of justice, securing despotism.

Instead of universalizing education, they will universalize surveillance and the data-strip-mining of human personality. We present our analysis of humanity's last chance in the last kilometer: what is about to go fatally wrong, and what we can do about it to preserve freedom and human social autonomy in the last moments before they are extinguished.
