The Psychedelic Experience in the Digital Age

Short thesis

This session will explore the the psychedelic experience from two different perspectives.

Ciara Sherlock, psychedelic experience facilitator and founder of the Psychedelic Society of Ireland will show how digital communication is facilitating the third wave of the psychedelic age that is now unfolding.

Dr Bryan Duggan VR experience facilitator and computer science lecture in DIT will explore the psychedelic experience from the perspective of Timothy Leary, Terence McKenna, Alan Watts, Psychedelic Science and others and he will show how how aspects of the psychedelic experience can be conveyed through immersive virtual reality.

Description

This session will explore the the psychedelic experience from two different perspectives:

Ciara Sherlock, psychedelic experience facilitator and founder of the Psychedelic Society of Ireland will show how digital communication is facilitating the third wave of the psychedelic age that is now unfolding. She will analyse the reasons for the failure of first (traditional tribal use) and second (use during the counterculture of the 1960s) waves and argues that this third wave is likely to be unstoppable due to way technology facilitates direct sharing of transcendent psychedelic experiences and the dissemination of scientific information on the therapeutic uses of psychedelics. She will further give examples of how the digital world has brought about the growth of local and global psychedelic communities, gatherings and symposiums growing a global network of conscious, loving and curious psychonauts.

Dr Bryan Duggan VR experience facilitator and computer science lecture in DIT will explore the psychedelic experience from the perspective of Timothy Leary, Terence McKenna, Alan Watts, Psychedelic Science and others. Further, he will show how how aspects of the psychedelic experience can be conveyed through immersive virtual reality by providing beautiful, psychedelic inspired, consciousness expanding experiences to the player. He will discuss several VR projects inspired by psychedelic consciousness and culture and reflect on his own journey programming creatures in DEEP. Set in a beautiful, fantasy underwater environment, DEEP is a meditative and psychoactive virtual reality experience that encourages mindful, deep yoga breathing in order to help relieve anxiety.
