Resilient Thessaloniki Tour

Short thesis

The Resilient Thessaloniki Tour offers a tour of the city through a resilience lens. Thessaloniki experienced a big earthquake, a fire that destroyed the city center, and major population changes around the World Wars as it lost its Jewish population and received refugees from Asia Minor. Today, there are organizations and citizen groups leading new initiatives for social inclusion and a growing tech, startup and creative ecosystem. Our Resilience Tour will introduce you to the city through stories and interesting facts that you can take with you as you explore the city center.

Description

People joining the Resilient Thessaloniki Tour will visit points around the city center that are related to historical events and initiatives happening today to make the city and its communities more resilient, in environmental, economic, and social issues. Participants will have a map with stories and facts about key locations and how they are linked to the city's resilience journey. They will meet some locals along the way, and make their way to a finishing point where we can get to know each other and exchange our thoughts about the city and how we can make it even more resilient.

Resilient Thessaloniki organized this tour as a Mystery Game in June 2017, for local residents. We worked with partner organizations and our resilience community to identify points of interest, and gather information about events that happened there in the past, or initiatives that are taking place now. Some of the locations are also points of cultural or touristic interest, and others are locations that are not evident to tourists or visitors without the insight of a local.

Thessaloniki was selected to join the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) network, and launched its first Resilience Strategy, "Thessaloniki 2030", in March 2017. This Resilient Thessaloniki Tour is a way for visitors and residents to connect with the city's historical resilience timeline, current strategy, and community of partners, and vision for a resilient future.
