Marcel Baltzer studied Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering and holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from RWTH Aachen University. From 2012 to 2015, he worked at the Academic and Research Department of Human Systems Integration at RWTH Aachen University, specializing in the subject of Interaction Mediation. His research focused on how interaction between humans and cooperative automation can be optimized in terms of usability, energy efficiency, comfort, safety, and joy of use. Since 2015, he has been the head of the research group "Cooperative Guidance and Control" and the deputy head of the research department "Balanced Human Systems Integration" at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Communication, Information processing and Ergonomics (FKIE). His research primarily focuses on interaction design in highly automated sociotechnical systems. He also serves as a Technical Team Member in various NATO Research Task Groups, working on the topics of Extended Reality, Human Autonomy Teaming, and Meaningful Human Control over AI-based systems.
