Worlding with the Molecular

Mary Maggic

Zusammenfassung
This two-hour workshop unpacks the concept of “open source estrogen,” the fact that hormonal molecules are available for us to hack, mutate, and become-with. Through a combined process of urine-hormone extraction and scenography-building, we begin to embody the very agency of industrial molecules.

Hands On

How do bodies become alien at the molecular level? How is this alteration inextricably tied to industrial capitalism? Combining body and gender politics and environmental toxicity, we begin to unpack the concept of “open source estrogen,” the underlying premise that hormonal molecules are ubiquitously all around us - available for us to hack, mutate, and become-with. Through this process of unboxing their molecular mystique, we see that even in our sea of toxic molecules, it is still a sublime sea of co-mattering. This workshop follows a public presentation on hormonal histories and fictions, and will include a hands-on embodied "worlding" exercise using a urine-hormone extraction protocol.

Please come well-hydrated and wearing comfortable clothing. No prior knowledge or experience needed. Because of the limited number of materials, this workshop will be first come first serve.

Make sure to visit as well the one-day installation "A Sublime Sea of Co-Mattering" following the workshop, "Worlding with the Molecular" where participants embody the very agency of industrial molecules. It will also include a small video installation that contextualizes this radical practice of hacking and becoming together.
