In order to remain sovereign in the age of ‘artificial intelligence’, a new mindset is needed, demands Björn Ommer. Generative AI can become an ‘enabling technology’ to initiate the transition from an information society to a knowledge society.

In order for this change to succeed, we need the right mindset in order to level the playing field and reclaiming our own agency. A key question will focus on  how can we conceptualise generative AI as a common good that is affordable and available to everyone

Shortly after Stable Diffusion as well as other AI models became available to the public free of charge, Björn Ommer spoke at re:publica for the first time. In his opening keynote at re:publica 25, he will outline the extent to which AI can actually play a positive role in our attention economy and how a publicly available AI can be utilised for the common good instead of individual interests.

Björn Ommer is a professor at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he heads the Computer Vision & Learning Group. In 2024, he was awarded the German AI Prize and the Technology Prize of the Eduard Rhein Foundation 2024, and his work that led to the AI model „Stable Diffusion“ was nominated for the German Future Prize of the Federal President for Technology and Innovation.
