re:publica 26 – ON SCREEN
Following a successful debut last year, the second day of re:publica 26 will once again be dedicated to innovative ideas for the future of audiovisual media. In the ON SCREEN programme special on 19 May, leading experts will discuss the latest industry trends across disciplines in a range of engaging formats.
The ON SCREEN programme special at re:publica 26 is once again being organised in close cooperation with various key players from Berlin-Brandenburg. Those involved include: Seriesly Berlin, MediaTech Hub Conference, Games Ground und A MAZE., as well as Doxumentale. ON SCREEN and the media track at re:publica 26 are funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg. ON SCREEN was created on the initiative of the Medienboard in close collaboration with re:publica.
Programme Highlights
Inspired by this year’s re:publica motto “Never Gonna Give You Up”, ON SCREEN explores the boom in micro-dramas, which stand in contrast to the “Golden Age of Streaming” and are currently generating huge revenues in Asia and America. Another session analyses the global appeal of the Korean Hallyu wave. There is also a focus on the question of authenticity in the age of generative AI, on new media utopias, and on how films, series and games can spark social debates and shape our collective self-image.
Speakers include director and screenwriter Tom Tykwer, who is currently filming the fifth and final season of the series Babylon Berlin; comedian and author Aurel Aurel Mertz; podcaster Frank Joung; and presenter Hadnet Tesfai, who will be moderating the ON-SCREEN programme.
Actor, musician and producer Tyron Ricketts, producer, director and actress Sheri Hagen, film and media critic Matthias Dell, and actor, author and filmmaker Lamin Leroy Gibba will discuss power, representation and the scope for action within the German film and series landscape. How can the industry position itself strategically, in solidarity and artistically before the scope for action narrows further?
Marni Hanke and Jörg Friedrich from Paintbucket Games, along with Daniel Stolz from SWR X Lab, will discuss how Babylon Berlin, one of the most successful German series of recent years, is being turned into a game. Other sessions will feature industry experts such as Henriette Lippold (Producer & Programme Developer at UFA MITTE GmbH)), Kai Fischer (Head of Constantin Creators at Constantin Entertainment), Fawzi Mesmar (VP Creative Director at Ubisoft) and many more.
The ON SCREEN SPACE in the re:publica Expo Area at STATION Berlin is a hybrid meeting place where nostalgia meets high-tech, bringing Berlin’s film history together with the tech pioneers of tomorrow. Here, visitors can relax amongst original film sets from the Studio Babelsberg collection, engage in in-depth discussions or immerse themselves in indie games and XR experiences.
