At the end of 2024, the two-part documentary ‘Deepfake Pornos’ was published. Some of the featured women only found out about their deepfakes through the research. Bröckling also spoke to the perpetrators that produce deepfake porn. In doing so, she was even able to identify one of them and confront him with his crimes. However, until today, non of the perpetrators were convicted – and the distribution of deepfake porn remains largely unpunished in practice.
Meanwhile the new German government - as stated in the coalition agreement - wants better protection against deepfake porn. What could such a regulation look like? Why is it currently failing?
Marie Bröckling is an investigative journalist. For CORRECTIV, she focuses on possible proceedings to ban the AfD. In 2020-2023, she reported from Hong Kong, mainly for NBC News. Most recently, her film 'Deepfake-Pornos' with Collien Ulmen-Fernandes was shown on ZDF.
