As the internet functions as critical infrastructure for society, the authoritarian nature of the digital sphere also extends to our daily life – warns the technologist Robin Berjon. For him one thing is clear: this trajectory is unsustainable.
However, up to this point, change is typically achieved either by pleading with large companies to behave better or, occasionally, by coercing them. He further acknowledges that the lack of experience with democratic governance in the digital realm complicates efforts to envision solutions. Despite this challenge, Robin Berjon proposes a path forward. He advocates for the use of open protocols and technical architectures designed to support democratic principles. By leveraging such technologies and deepening our understanding of the role of digital infrastructure, Berjon believes it is possible to create genuinely democratic social media platforms.
Robin Berjon is a technologist specialising in the governance of digital tech. He runs Supramundane Agency and is deputy director of the IPFS Foundation. Previously he was VP of Data Governance at The New York Times, where he worked on privacy and safeguarding media independence, and Vice-Chair of the board of the World Wide Web Consortium. His work focuses on building durable democratic governance of technology so that our digital sphere starts operating in the public interest at the planetary scale. He serves as a custodian of Free Our Feeds and is a founder of the EuroStack initiative.
