In May 2022, the Brazilian state of Pernambuco suffered the worst rains of this century. In this clear case of what science defines as a climatic extreme, 126 people died, and more than 9 thousand were left homeless. The impacts were felt in all sectors, and the catastrophe generated two effects on local citizenship:

  • 1. recognition of the dimension of the climate crisis; and
  • 2. a willingness to cooperate and collaborate with actions that mitigate the effects of this crisis, which is expected to increase in the coming years, according to information from the intergovernmental panels on the climate.

From February to May 2023, LabStorm invited 30 citizens from Recife Metropolitan Region, Pernambuco's state capital, Brazil's northeast region. People of different ages, classes, genders, and ethnicities participated in a citizen laboratory focused on generating citizen innovation prototypes to combat the climate emergency.

Come and join this session to celebrate the impacts of the Global South Maker Community to mitigate climate change effects locally.
