Carla Hustedt is the director of the “Centre for Digital Society” at the Mercator Foundation. Her work focuses on the impact of digitalization on democratic structures. Since the start of the program in 2021 she has build new institutions, developed and funded more than 30 projects with partners from academia, thinktanks and civil society and on issues such as AI-policy, information integrity and platform governance, the digital transformation of the public sector. Until 2021 she was the head of the Bertelsmann Foundation’s “Ethics of Algorithms” project. In this position she coordinated interdisciplinary and intersectoral working groups and advised German and European policy makers on the development of the AI Act and corresponding AI policy. Carla Hustedt is the Chair of the Steering Committee of the European AI and Society fund and a member of the advisory board of the initiative “SheTransformsIT for more women in tech. In 2021 Capital Magazin awarded her as one of Germany's "top 40 under 40" talents in the category "societal issues".
