Who knows what is truly real? Who documents the truth in times of crisis and war – and who fights to keep it untouched?

Three years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the exile journalists Masha Borzunova – former face of the opposition channel Dozhd and host of ARTE’s “Masha on Russia” – and Vladlena Savenkova – filmmaker and producer for ARTE TRACKS East – draw a devastating conclusion.

As close observers of Russian propaganda, they are alarmed to see the “Putin model” gaining ground. Aggressive disinformation and the deliberate destabilization of societies are on the rise around the world.

How should we deal with fake news that now also shakes democracies and forces those who fight for truth to face life-and-death consequences?

TRACKS East is ARTE’s geopolitical culture format that explores global crises through the eyes of local creatives, activists, and artists.
