This panel shines a spotlight on the hidden workforce behind our digital platforms: data workers. Based on the outcomes of a workshop held in Nairobi in August 2024, the session explores how Kenyan and German data workers collaboratively developed eight demands to improve working conditions in the global digital platform economy. These demands include fair compensation, mental health support, robust legal protections, and the right to unionize—foundational elements for ensuring fair and inclusive digital labor frameworks in this often-overlooked sector.

The discussion will uncover how outsourcing and deliberate fragmentation of digital labor isolate workers and weaken collective action, underlining the urgent need for international solidarity and global responsibility. German data workers will share their experiences with labor councils and policy frameworks, while Kenyan speakers will provide insights into the evolving digital labor bill and the fight for recognition of their work.
