Christoph Bieber

Prof. Dr. Christoph Bieber is a research professor for Digital Democratic Innovations at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies in Bochum (CAIS). His five-year research program started in 2021 and is focusing on the political aspects of Smart Cities and processes of digital decision-making. Also, he holds a professorship in Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen (currently on leave).

Christoph went online early and found himself completing his dissertation thesis on Political Projects on the Internet: Computer-Mediated Communication and the Political Public Sphere back in 1999. He has published widely on the effects of online communication for political systems and policy-making. His books include Nach Obama (with Klaus Kamps, 2017), Unter Piraten. Erkundungen in einer neuen politischen Arena (ed. with Claus Leggewie, 2012) and Politik digital. Online zum Waehler (2010). On Twitter / X he was known as @drbieber until January 20, 2025 and has just recently moved his very short online messages to @drbieber.bsky.social.
